Ebeneezer

This is Ebeneezer. He lives at the Methodist Orphan and Vulnerable Children Center in Lawra. He is here with his mother, Yaa, and his sister, Noella. Ebeneezer is at the center because he is, what the Dagaaba people call, a "snake." Ebeneezer was born without any muscle control. As an infant, he could not hold up his head, kick his legs, fling his arms or grasp a finger. The Dagaaba people believe that children like Ebeneezer should live in the woods where the snakes live and would allow these children to die. This happens today, in 2011. So, Ebeneezer's life is a miracle. He is almost four years old. As you can see, he can lift his head. He can pull himself around on his stomach. And, if you stand him up , holding his hands, he struggles to take a few steps. With care, with "therapy," with prayer, Ebeneezer will walk one day. May God give him the help and the strength he needs.

My Christmas Prayer for the Children of Lawra Orphanage

I have only one hope for these children,
That Jesus knows their grief,
That He carries their sorrows,
That they will call on Him and they will answer,
And that His presence will be a healing balm in their lives.
There is too much to fix in the lives of these children.

But Jesus does more than fix.
He redeems, delivers, heals and restores.
He reconciles. He brings peace.
He can be God to them right where they are.
That really is their only and best hope.

(I would like to add that He can be Father to them, too.)

Mother's Day

Today is Mothers Day. And, as I sit here, I can't help but think of the children at the Lawra Orphanage. They have never known the love of a mother. They were very young when their mothers died of HIV/AIDS. Today, I long to be with them. Not, to "mother" them, but to love and nurture them with the love of Christ. I want them to know that they can have a hope for the future because of Him. They can be the change for the better in their community. If they live, if they are nurtured, if they are loved, if...
