Me? A Basket Case...Yep!

Today was one of those days...a day that as time went on, I became overwhelmed by the next "big" task that is on the horizon. I felt the fear creep in. I was ready to cry...This is the story:

Monday, I will be traveling with Naamal (5 years old) and her father to Kumasi. We will be going to a teaching hospital where Naamal can receive treatment for the tumor that has been growing in her mouth for three years. Today, it hit me...I have no idea where we are going, where we will stay and, I have a limited amount of money for travel and treatment. What will I do? Up to this point, Naamal's parents were not involved. No relative would travel with her. So, I didn't have to think about these things. But, now, her father is here. So, we made plans to travel on Monday. Everyone that I tried to contact in Kumasi was unavailable or didn't answer their phone. Ugh! What would we do? I am not Ghanaian enough to just travel and see what happens when I arrive. I have two other people to think about. What to do?

I called Razak. He would know what to do. He said, "I am on my way coming." An hour and a half later, I called him again. "Oh, Mama Sue, I forgot. I am on my way..." He showed up in five minutes. He called Rev. Job. who lives in Kumasi and could help us. No answer. He called Rev. Lawrence...he is in a meeting, will call back later. He called Rev. Dery...he will call back later.... (They are all related.) I was almost in tears because of the uncertainty of it all. What to do?

Rev. Lawrence did call back. He called Rev. Job in Kumasi. Rev. Job will take care of us. Either himself or his daughter, Grace will go to the hospital with us and help us through the process. Grace...God's grace...I didn't have to be a basket case...God heard the cries of my heart...and He ANSWERED!

The Paradox Continues

This week I went shopping. I didn't visit too many stores - Wal Mart, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Staples and K Mart. All but once, I went in, looked around and bought only what I intended to buy when I walked into the store. The one time I didn't, I only spent an extra $2. Shopping is not one of my favorite past times.

But, it is Christmas season. There are so many pretty things to look at: Christmas mugs and plates, Christmas napkins, Christmas towels, stuffed Christmas toys (soft & cuddly), warm jackets, mittens...all kinds of fun stuff. It's so tempting. I have to remind myself that I don't "need" any of it. I'm moving in two months. But, it;s so nice..."No, let it go, don't even go there." And, I keep walking. It's fun to look - sometimes.

Yes, the paradox continues. I'm torn between two worlds. One foot is here in Pennsylvania and the other foot is ready to be placed in Ghana. It's happy & sad at the same time. And it's all good. I'm getting through it because of the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ and the prayers of friends. And, I will continue to get through it because of them.

A New Joint

It's been 11 days since I went to The Medical Center, Beaver to receive a new knee. I am such a wimp or at least I feel that way. Surgery went well and I was discharged on Friday, Dec. 12. Now that I'm home I can't seem to find a lot of comfortable places to sit and I wonder if any progress is being made. But, then, I stop, take a deep breath and remember that a week ago, I couldn't lift my leg by myself. I couldn't get into bed without difficulty. I couldn't walk up and down the steps without talking to myself for 5 minutes first to "gear myself up." And, a week ago I couldn't get into a bathtub. Yes, the exercizes are painful and some may be from Satan instead of the Lord, but, little by little, the right things are happening. I can't drive yet (It's too cold outside anyway) because I don't have a 90 degree angle at my knee. That's fine with me! Last year I was in Ghana for Christmas and I was hoping to be around for some of the festivities at church this year. But, I'm not sure if there is a comfortable chair to sit in, where I can put up my leg. I'll try to work this out for Christmas Eve. All in all, God is good. It's His mercy and grace and the prayers of believers that have gotten me this far. I'm looking forward to using this new knee in Ghana!

Basking in God's Grace

I went home today to check my mail and messages. The good news is my stress test was normal. I am basking in God's Grace.
